Sophia Abbarno, a ninth grader at W.F. West High School, recently traveled to Olympia to serve as a page in the Washington state House of Representatives.

Her sponsor was a familiar face — her father, state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Chehalis.

“It was incredibly meaningful to watch Sophia experience the Legislature up close,” said Peter Abbarno, House Republican Caucus chair. “She worked hard, embraced every opportunity to learn, and brought such a positive attitude to everything she did. I was proud to see her grow in confidence throughout the week and share her experience with friends and family.”

During her time at the Capitol, Sophia helped deliver messages and documents to legislators, navigated the Capitol campus, and assisted on the House floor. She also attended page school each day, where students learn how laws are made and gain a better understanding of the legislative process.

“The page program gives students a firsthand look at how their government works,” Peter Abbarno added. “Seeing Sophia ask questions, meet new people, and learn alongside other students from across the state was really special. She made the most of this experience.”

Outside of her legislative duties, Sophia enjoys riding horses and playing soccer for W.F. West and Twin City Union F.C.

Each year, students from across Washington apply to participate in the legislative page program. Pages earn $65 per day and receive hands-on civic education through page school and by working alongside House members and staff.

“I'm grateful Sophia chose to spend her time here in Olympia,” Peter Abbarno concluded. “I hope this experience inspires her to stay curious, stay engaged, and continue finding ways to serve her community.”
