A Winlock man was arrested Saturday after allegedly strangling and threatening to kill a woman.

Richard Carl Bruce Jr., 28, of Winlock, was charged Monday in Lewis County Superior Court with second-degree assault, domestic violence, and harassment — threat to kill, domestic violence and granted $25,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.

Police responded to the 300 block of Cherry Street in Winlock at 1:18 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a possible assault. They interviewed the alleged victim, who told police she and Bruce, her boyfriend, had been fighting, according to court documents.

When she told him she wanted to leave, Bruce allegedly placed his hands around her neck and started choking her. She told police he also threatened to kill her, according to court documents.

“It appears he strangled his girlfriend on more than one occasion,” said deputy prosecutor Sara Beigh Monday during Bruce’s first court appearance.
