A person was taken to a hospital Monday morning after a state bridge-inspection team helped pull her from the water near the Fox Island Bridge, authorities said.

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to a call around 8:30 a.m. that a youth went off the bridge, according to an agency post on Twitter. According to the tweet, the rescue was assisted by a Washington State Department of Transportation bridge inspection crew.

Fire crews are working with the person's family to determine why she might have jumped off the bridge. Gig Harbor Fire declined to provide the person's age, citing federal privacy laws.

WSDOT spokesperson Tina Werner told The News Tribune bridge-preservation engineers were conducting an underwater inspection of the bridge Monday morning.

"They have a boat that they use as part of their routine inspection work. As they were setting up for the inspection, someone approached a crew member and said they witnessed someone jump off the Fox Island Bridge roughly 20 minutes earlier," Werner told The News Tribune.

According to Werner, WSDOT inspectors began looking for the person and located her.

Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One spokesperson Tina Curran said the youth was conscious when transported to a local hospital. According to Curran, there is an ongoing investigation.
