Earlier this week, Midway Underground broke ground on the Yew Street extension project in Centralia. The project’s goal is to join Yew Street with Long Road, connecting both to Ellsbury Street.

Port of Centralia Executive Director Kyle Heaton spoke briefly to The Chronicle about the work, which prompted excitement for some residents eager to see completion of the Centralia Station project.

“The work will continue over the winter and we expect to finish the Yew Street extension sometime mid-2023, depending on weather and a few other things,” Heaton said.

The project is part of the infrastructure needed for Centralia Station, a planned mixed-use development that will feature WinCo as the anchor tenant and will be located near the Mellen Street overpass.

Some of the other work that still needs to be completed includes the vacating and demolition of an apartment complex on Brotherson Road.

Midway Underground, a Toledo-based construction contractor, was awarded the contract for this project on Aug. 26 for a bid of $6,116,322.03, as previously reported by The Chronicle.
