Bearcats knocked out of district tournament by Beavers

The W.F. West girls soccer team got the first goal Thursday, but it wasn’t enough in a 2-1 loss to Woodland in the 2A District 4 Tournament to end the Bearcats’ season.

“The final game of the year kind of ended how things went for the season for us,” WFW coach Kevin Schultz said.

The Bearcats outshot the Beavers 19-9, putting 13 shots on target to Woodland’s six. But outside of Wyatt Rogerson’s go-ahead strike in the 23rd minute, W.F. West just couldn’t get the ball over the goal line and between the posts.

“It was honestly one of the better games we’ve played at creating chances, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net, and that’s what soccer’s about,” Schultz said.

Woodland drew a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 37th minute and converted the ensuing penalty kick to draw the match level on the stroke of halftime.

Then, 15 minutes into the second half, the Beavers took the lead on a long, looping shot by Adi Stading that found its way into the net.

W.F. West ends the year at an even 9-9, in Schultz’s first year in charge of the program.

The Bearcats will graduate seven seniors: Staysha Fluetsch, Baylee Kambich, Lena Fragner, Kylee Breen, Anna Alexander, Zoey Robertson and Macee Shannon.

“For my first season I couldn’t have asked for a better group,” Schultz said.
