Bearcats Take Down Aberdeen 2-0

It wasn’t quite the two-minute offense, but Meghan Ward and Olivia Erskine put up W.F. West’s winning goals in the 37th and 39th minutes to beat Aberdeen 2-0 Thursday in Evergreen 2A Conference play at Bearcat Stadium.

Erskine’s goal was the highlight of the night, according to coach Tino Sanchez, as she netted a free kick from 30 yards out.

“You couldn’t ask for a better shot,” Sanchez said. “We work with her on set plays in practice from that range.”

Erskine might have had the play of the evening, but the entire Bearcat roster looked strong.

“As a team, we played real well,” the coach added. “Defense did well. We had to move some players in and move them around. We’re pretty solid back there.”

Freshman Chelsea Fechtner stopped four shots on goal to earn the shutout. Sanchez was also impressed with the play of Emily Jorgensen and Kiersten Abbott.

“It’s a great group of girls,” the coach said. “Without our seniors, this team would not be doing as well as we are. The other girls look up to them and the work ethic they bring to practice.”

The Bearcats (11-3, 9-3 league) currently sit in third place in the Evergreen 2A Conference and have two more regular season games, including hosting River Ridge Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Tigers Pull Away From Hoquiam

HOQUIAM — Rainey Pelzel broke a 23-minute tie with a goal in the 54th minute and added another in the 76th-minute to lead Centralia to a 3-1 Evergreen 2A Conference victory here Thursday night.

It was part of a 20-minute spree that left Centralia coach Sue Parke happy with her team.

“In that last part of the second half, we played better than we have all season,” she said. “I was really pleased with how they responded to their adversity.”

The scoring didn’t happen on its own.

“The girls were also passing a lot better than usual,” Parke added.

Kailee Zurfluh knocked in the Tigers’ first goal off of a rebound during the ninth minute of play. Caitlyn Sande added an assist on Pelzel’s first goal.

Centralia (5-7) travels to Elma Tuesday as it attempts to stay alive in the race for an EvCo playoff spot.
