Special teams ignite Pirates in blowout win over Spartans

A clear tide of momentum shifted towards the Adna High School football team on Friday night thanks to two kickoff returns that aided it to a 43-14 victory over Forks in a C2BL West contest in Forks.

Luke Mohney, with seven seconds left in the half after the Spartans snared the lead, returned the ensuing kickoff for six, but a penalty called it back. The Pirates opened the second half with the ball and Grayson Humphrey followed his blockers and found the endzone on his own kickoff return.

Adna (3-3, 2-1 C2BL West) proceeded to outscore Forks 30-0 in the second half. Beau Miller scored three times and he continued to build a resume as a first team all-league tailback with 194 yards on 27 touches. Mohney tallied two rushing touchdowns for the Pirates.

Defensively, Stephen O’Dell finished with 14.5 tackles and a forced fumble that was recovered by Cash Smith. Jackson Knittles had one of three sacks for the Pirates plus Ken Kephart hauled in an interception.

“It is a good win,” Adna head coach Aaron Cochran said. “We’re getting better within the game. Started off a little bit stiff on defense; settled down and made good decisions.”

The Pirates will face Coupeville in a non-league game next week.
