Fishing guide’s death in Columbia River prompts huge outpouring of financial support for family

An online fundraiser for the family of a fishing guide who drowned in the Columbia River has raised $200,000 just three days after it was posted on the fundraising website GoFundMe.

Michael Shufeldt, 26, was found dead Tuesday, nearly a week after his 24-foot boat sank in unexpected bad weather during a fishing trip with six others. Shufeldt, who owned Reel Deal Adventures, was leading the trip as a guide.

Days after his boat sank and he disappeared, Shufeldt’s friend in the fishing community launched a GoFundMe page in Shufeldt’s name, asking for $20,000 to help support the Washington man’s wife and two children after his death.

“Michael was not only a skilled fisherman but also a loving husband and father,” wrote Marlin LeFever, founder of the YouTube fishing channel Addicted Fishing. “His untimely passing has left his family—his wife and two young children—facing unimaginable challenges.”

By Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser was approaching 900 donations for a total of more than $204,000.

Shufeldt’s family could not immediately be reached.
