Former TV Host Curley to Speak at Centralia College

Posted

When John Curley comes to Centralia College on March 26 for a roundup of workshops on health, wealth, business and technology, the focus of his speech will focus on the “reptilian part” of the brain.

That’s the part of the brain near the back of the skull at the top of the spine that isn’t fully evolved and when faced with fight or flight situations, “turns us into a caveman.”

“People feel it all the time,” said Curley, whose theme for the keynote speech of Advantage 2010, a symposium sponsored by West Coast Bank, Centralia College Foundation and Providence Centralia Hospital, is “Stress, Bad Choices and the Brain: An Iron-Clad Formula for Success in Difficult Times.”

Stress. It’s a part of daily lives in unforeseen events and those that are expected. It can leave us sweaty in the palms, dry in the throat or frantic and lost.

Curley, a former 14-year host of King 5’s Evening Magazine and now a motivational speaker, as well as a professional auctioneer, Sammamish council member and Ironman tri-athlete, said he has three tips for people when dealing with stress.

At noon in Washington Hall at the college he’ll teach those tips for free to attendees who pre-register for the symposium by March 19. Pre-registration includes a free lunch as well.

Curley said the crux of his presentation will focus on a near-drowning he experienced while participating in his first triathlon, Ironman France in 2008, where he made a bad decision while swimming near the French Riviera and was faced with unexpected choices to make.

Another part of the symposium, beginning at 8 a.m., includes free blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure checks.

Providence Centralia spokesman Chris Thomas said fasting for about eight hours is required for the cholesterol check; a couple of hours are required for the blood sugar check.
