In January, a precinct committee officer invited me to meet with Tracy Murphy and his wife, Sherri, to discuss volunteering as a campaign aide.
Having volunteered on numerous successful political campaigns in Arizona from 2016 through 2024, I understood the commitment involved. Campaigns require considerable time, organization and dedication, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.
Before agreeing, I wanted to understand Tracy’s priorities, his vision for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, and what motivated him to run. I asked tough questions and even challenged some of his answers.
What stood out to me most was Tracy’s focus on the safety and wellbeing of Lewis County residents and his thoughtful approach to meaningful improvements.
He discussed examining sheriff’s office operations from the ground up, including jail safety, administration, budgeting, staffing, criminal investigations and getting more deputies into our communities. He also spoke about supporting employees through training and supervision, strengthening accountability, and using taxpayer dollars responsibly.
Throughout our conversation, the focus remained on the needs of Lewis County residents. There were no negative comments about Sheriff Snaza, other elected officials or fellow candidates. No political finger-pointing, just a thoughtful discussion about public safety, leadership, and serving our communities.
Nearly 10 months later, that focus hasn’t changed.
I’ve observed Tracy at meet-and-greets, community events, debates and while knocking on doors. He listens to residents, welcomes difficult questions, and thoughtfully considers differing opinions. And if you’ve seen him during a parade, you’ve probably noticed how much he enjoys interacting with people.
Throughout a demanding campaign, I’ve watched him remain calm, thoughtful and grounded in his faith. His priorities have remained consistent, while my understanding of his experience and leadership philosophy has grown.
I believe Lewis County residents deserve thorough, timely investigations, a safe and effectively managed jail, well-trained deputies, responsible use of public funds, and leadership that is accessible and accountable.
I don’t believe in change simply for the sake of change. Meaningful change requires evaluating what’s working, improving what isn’t, listening to employees and residents, and making difficult decisions when necessary.
What began as a willingness to volunteer has grown into genuine respect for Tracy’s leadership, his commitment to public safety, and his vision for Lewis County.
These are the reasons I’m proud to support Tracy Murphy for Lewis County sheriff.
