Randle’s Huff ‘N’ Puff Scores High Marks With Tourists and Locals Alike

For skiers, local residents, hikers and adventurers of all sorts, the Huff ’N’ Puff restaurant just west of Randle on U.S. Highway 12 is a destination not to be missed.

The restaurant, with its vibrant exterior and massive signs on each end simply stating “EAT,” has operated with little interruption since the late 1950s, according to the current owners Robyn and Stewart Hall, who bought the business around seven years ago after a long-time owner died.

The Halls are locals, and said they would come to Huff ‘N’ Puff multiple times a week for food, but more importantly, ice cream.

“This is a community, sort of local and there was a place for us to get our ice cream cones,” Stewart Hall said.

After being shut down for six months, the couple took it over and later bought it. Since then,  Stewart Hall, said business has been steadily growing and the restaurant was even featured in National Geographic’s “Traveler” magazine.

Robyn Hall described their business as a classic burgers and shakes outfit, but the humble description skirts the wide array of burgers, shakes and homemade take-and-bake pizzas they also offer.

While Robyn Hall said the bacon cheeseburger is always a popular choice, they also serve game, including an elk burger.

“We actually have a lot to offer. We have a big menu and a lot of food,” she said.

While the actual eating space inside is limited, Robyn Hall said that up to 75 percent of their business is from carry out orders.

They also see a lot of hunters, tourists and travelers swing through, including one large group of people from the United Kingdom she remembers in particular.

Stewart Hall said some of their biggest eaters end up being skiers, who generally get one of their milkshakes to top off a burger on their way to or from the White Pass Ski Area.

The Huff ‘N’ Puff is also located under a large rock outcropping on the mountains called Table Rock, and that combined with the colorful exterior gets lots of people to stop and take pictures, he said.

The Halls also said they like to support local sports and provide the community with a place to get a bite. On Wednesday morning, families could be found eating inside the restaurant or ducking in to say hello and grab some food to go.

“It’s nice that we can give back to our community a little bit,” Stewart Hall said. “... I think it’s just a good little place. A lot of people like it.”

Huff ‘N’ Puff is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
