Less than one year after opening, the Shiplap Quilt Shop and Coffee House in Tenino will be featured in the fall edition of the Quilt Sampler Magazine.
The fall magazine featuring Shiplap will be released and available on Sept. 9.
Since 1995, Quilt Sampler has released magazines twice a year featuring North America’s finest quilt shops.
Shiplap Quilt Shop was nominated by a customer, according to co-owner Gary Rurup. Following the nomination, the magazine sent out a “secret shopper” to visit Shiplap and see if they meet the criteria to be featured.
Rurup, and his wife Kristin, later received an email from Quilt Sampler revealing they were selected to be featured in the fall edition of their magazine. Nearly 3,000 quilt shops throughout America were in the running.
“It’s a pretty big honor,” Rurup said. “We opened our quilt shop in Tenino during October of last year. We’re still relatively new and it’s been amazing to receive this kind of recognition.”
Rurup said he expects foot traffic to increase at the store after they are featured in the magazine. He called a portion of recipients of Quilt Sampler’s magazine “die hards.” He expects those who receive the edition will travel across the country to visit the best quilt shops around.
Prior to the fall edition of Quilt Sampler being released, Rurup said he has already had visitors from outside of the area come to the shop, including two women from Chicago who were visiting the area. They saw Shiplap would be featured in the magazine online and wanted to visit the store before visits to the shop increased.
“It’s been a pretty cool process for us and hopefully some great tourism will come out of it for the City of Tenino,” Rurup said.
The magazine will also feature a quilt that was designed by Rurup and created by his wife Kristin. Along with their award winning quilt, there will be a 12-page spread dedicated to all things Shiplap. Those involved with Shiplap’s productions were interviewed by a team from Quilt Sampler.
By the end of August, Shiplap will have their feature quilt on full display in their shop as well.
The store plans to open a third location on Yelm Highway. The new location will feature a quilt shop and a coffee house.
