ONALASKA — The Loggers scored four runs in the third and sixth innings to put away Mossyrock, 9-1, in a Central 2B League baseball game here Thursday.
Matt Kurzeika pitched 5 ⅓ innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five to record the win, and went 3 for 4 at the plate with three runs to help his own cause.
Tyler Wallace was 2 for 4 with a run and Adrian Sanchez had a two-run double for the Loggers.
Brennen Shriver was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead Mossyrock.
“(We did) everything today. We hit the ball well, had good pitching, excellent defense,” Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley said. “That’s the best defense we’ve played in two years. We’re getting better every game.”
The contest was scoreless until the third inning when the Loggers scored four runs, fueled by Sanchez’s two-run double, to break the game open.
Onalaska added another run in the fifth. Mossyrock scored its lone run in the sixth inning, but left a handful of runners stranded on base.
The Loggers then pounced on the Vikings in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to put the game away for good.
“We’re just playing. We went to Yakima Monday and Tuesday and played three games over there in good weather,” Stanley said. “We came back, played today, got two more on Saturday. You play six games in a week, you’re going to get better. It’s about rhythm and reps and that’s what we wanted and it’s paying off.”
Mossyrock recorded only four hits in the game and also had four errors.
“We stopped throwing strikes. You stop throwing strikes, you get more opportunities for base runners and a couple errors here and there, mix in a hit of two and the inning has gotten away from you,” Viking coach Jay Henderson said. “That’s exactly what happened tonight.”
The Vikings fall to 0-7 with the loss.
“Just compete, that’s all I ask,” Henderson said. “We’ve had a lot of success over the years at Mossyrock, and it’s all about competing. I don’t care really what the score is, come out there and give your best effort and after it, whatever happens happens. We are missing a couple players, we’ve had injuries. … That hurts.”
Onalaska (3-7, 2-4) faces Rainier on Saturday in a C2BL doubleheader, scheduled for noon at the RAC in Lacey. Mossyrock (0-7, 0-7) is scheduled to host Toledo on Saturday at noon in a league doubleheader.
