The Riverhawks picked up their first victory of the season with a 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 triumph over Class 1A Evergreen Rochester on Thursday night on their home floor.

Even without outside hitter Lexi Young in the lineup, Toledo (1-3) didn’t falter at the net. Abby Umbriaco moved over from the right side and provided a 17 kill performance. Ellie Fallon paced the front row with 19 kills and also posted a team-best six aces. Setter Sidney Kruger had the highest kill percentage at 62 percent.

“Tonight, we made a step in the right direction,” Riverhawks head coach Kelli Larson said.

Rochester (0-6) secured the opening set with a late rally, but couldn’t sustain the momentum. Cheyenne Justice notched a team-high 15 digs and fired three aces from the service line. Lexi Dupont fueled the front row with three kills and three blocks.

“We go hot and cold so fast,” Warriors head coach Courtney Baird said. “I said we have to make a decision of how we want the remainder of the season to go. We can go that route again and the seniors can have a crappy senior year, or we can decide now that we want something different. That just means when we walk into the gym tomorrow we have to work harder and want to be better.”

Toledo will face C2BL foe Winlock in a non-league game on Monday while Rochester opens the Evergreen League slate against Elma on Thursday.
