Winlock boys triumph at Egg Invite on home track

Behind a 1-2-3 finish in the 800-meter run and a 1-2 performance in the discus, the Cardinals did just enough to clip Adna 129-124 to secure the boys team win at the Egg Invitational on Thursday night at home.

Pe Ell finished with 47 points to place fifth and Oakville-North River registered 18 points to round out the eight-team field. Winlock, off a trip to the state cross country meet, had 11 events with a top-five runner.

Xavier Sancho-Carrillo picked up victories in the 400 and 800 while Jacob Trodahl claimed the 3,200-meter run and Lincoln Ruiz tossed the discus 138-01 to win by over 25 feet for the Cardinals.

Adna also had a 1-2-3 placement in the 1,600-meter run, won by Bailey Davis. It also had 11 events with at least one top-five placement. Gavan Muller cruised to sweep the 110 and 300 hurdle races while the quartet of Kolton Moon, Kannen Kephart, Colton Rind and Steven O’Dell won the 1,600-meter relay.

Pe Ell’s highest finishers were Jakob Hayes (200) and Calan McCarty (110 hurdles) while ONR’s Evan Schelsser was the runner-up in the shot put.

For the girls, Adna squeaked by Raymond-South Bend 153.5-144 for the team title. Winlock was third with 86 points while Pe Ell and ONR combined to score 13 points to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.

Middle-distance standout Ava Humphrey ran a 2:43.22 to win the 800 and ran a leg on the Pirates’ victorious 800 and 1,600-meter relays. Sorena Neilson joined Humphrey, Megan Stout and Lillian Wellander in the 1,600 relay while Karsyn Freeman, Alicia Ruiz de Velasco Guillen and Sophie Hagseth teamed with Humphrey in the 800 relay.

Freeman, the reigning Class 2B state champion in the discus, picked up where she left off with a victory toss of 123-03. Nielson won the 100 hurdles and Lydia Tobin threw over 100 feet to secure the javelin. Adna had 11 events with a top-five finish and over half with at least two.

Winlock’s Victoria Sancho, a returning state medalist, triumphed in the open 100 and 400 as its lone winner. Pe Ell’s Madi Engel took fifth in the 100 hurdles while ONR’s Brenna Moore registered a sixth place finish in the 800 and anchored the Acorns to sixth in the 800 relay.
