The Black Hills wrestling team went to coach Jason Dick’s old haunts and came away with a win Thursday, beating Rochester 49-23 in both sides’ first 2A EvCo dual of the winter.

“It was a good night. Emotional night,” Dick said. “It’s just always emotional going against your former place. The kids get excited because they know you’re from there.”

The Wolves came away with eight pins on the night. Conner Mounts in his first 2A dual after moving west from Rainier, won his match at 138 in especially dominating fashion, pinning Rochester’ Gordon Ford in 12 seconds.

“He’s wrestling at a very high level,” Dick said. “Going from B to 2A is a big jump, and he’s wrestling very well. He’s very coachable.”

Porter Neklason got his pin at 150 in 24 seconds, while Jaric Oraya joined the minute-pin club at 157, pinning Maddox Rogers in 57 seconds.

The Wolves also got pins from JJ Oraya (190), Aiden Labouff (120), Chad Bennett (126), Anthony Estrada (167) and Ammon Comes (175), while Khristian Brant won by technical fall at 144.

Rochester took pins from Jack Dane at 215, Jaden Nichols at 285, Bear Dixon at 106 and Rylan Calica at 132.

Bearcats roll past Highclimbers

The W.F. West wrestling team took 10 of the 14 matches on the line Thursday, beating Shelton 46-18 in a 2A EvCo dual.

Mason McGregor (113), Andrew Snyder (165), Cage Homan (175), Tucker Land (190), Andrew Penland (215) and Talan Meredith (285) all won by pin, while Jayce Ayers (106), Adrian James Montenegro (138), Grayson Serl (150) and Beau Guyette (157) all won by decision.

On a separate positive note, coach Jamie Rakevich added that the Bearcats and Highclimbers combined to run 38 JV matches, which nearly matches W.F. West’s entire total from last winter.

“It is good that the numbers are going back up to what they previously have been,” he said.

W.F. West will host Rochester next Wednesday.
