Beavers battle, but fall to Eagles at home

The Tenino girls soccer got on the board first against Elma on Thursday, but the Eagles scored the next three goals and left town with a 3-1 win.

Callie Mickelson put Tenino on top in the 33rd minute off an assist from Maria Summer, but Elma was able to tie the game on what ended up being the final play of the first half.

An Elma attacker drew a foul in the corner, and a foul kick from near the corner spot was headed in to tie the game at one. As soon as Tenino restarted play at midfield, the halftime whistle was blown.

“It was disappointing that literally the second to last kick was their goal,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “It was just that one goal right before half that gave Elma just a little touch of momentum.”

Elma took the lead in the 57th minute and added another goal in the 66th to extend the lead.

Montgomery commended his midfielders, Kyra Dirks and Paisley Garcia, saying he left them on an island and they did well against the Elma midfield.

“They had a big task but did a great job there,” Montgomery said.

He added that he was proud of the way the girls fought, saying that should give them confidence heading into their final two league games.

“If I’m the girls, I’m thinking we just made a ton of improvement,” Montgomery said. “For them to see that we can score against them and Montesano and hang with these teams, they should be feeling good about themselves.

“We’re not a bad team, we just have to finish out our league season,” he continued. “We just have to take care of business next week.”

The Beavers will finish their regular season with two league games next week, as they’ll host Hoquiam on Tuesday before heading to Rochester on Thursday.
