CC Roundup: Trailblazers swept by South Puget Sound

Posted

In the first few minutes of Centralia’s match against South Puget Sound on Wednesday, it appeared that the two teams would trade blows the whole way through.

Neither team scored more than two points in a row over the game’s first 16 points, until Centralia went on a run to force a Clipper timeout.

The Clippers came out firing out of the break, however, kicking into gear and riding that momentum to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 win over the Trailblazers.

“SPSCC did a good job of pushing us out of system tonight,” Centralia coach Ceanna Larson-Michalek said. “We definitely struggled in our serve and pass game, but we also had some great plays.”

After the timeout in the first set, the Clippers outscored the Trailblazers 16-6 over the rest of the set, and they raced out to a 14-5 lead in Set 2. The third set was a similar story, as the Trailblazers went down 10-5 and 15-8 before calling a timeout to regroup.

Centralia looked better out of the timeout, getting as close as three points, but South Puget Sound finished the match by scoring the final six points to seal it.

Paige Miller led Centralia with 15 kills and two aces, while Avery Starr tallied 26 assists and nine digs.

The Trailblazers (13-9, 3-2 NWAC) will be back at home on Friday against Pierce College, their final game before an 11-day break.

Men’s soccer blanked by Thunderbirds

The men’s soccer team had less luck against Highline on Wednesday, as the Trailblazers were shut out 7-0.

Highline led just 2-0 at the break, but they added a goal in the 51st minute before adding four more in the final 23 minutes of the match.

Like the women’s team, Centralia (2-8-2, 2-4-1 NWAC) will be back on the road on Saturday at Tacoma Community College.
